John and Katherine Moyers

“The most important investment one can make in our community is in its schools.”

John and Katherine Moyers

MoyersJohn and Katherine Moyers have made education and the area public schools a priority in their lives.  As parents of two children that both attended the Iowa City area schools, they have seen first-hand how the Foundation has helped provide extra programs, materials and experiences that enhanced their children’s education.

Katherine has been a long-time community volunteer, focusing a good share of her talents and energy on education and our area schools.  Katherine was a member of the Iowa City Community School District Foundation Board of Directors from 1993-2002, serving as president for two of those years.  She co-chaired the ICCSD Foundation’s 25th Anniversary campaign that raised $1.3 million dollars for the schools, co-chaired the 1993 97-cent PPEL Fund Renewal Committee, as well as the 1992 School Bond Referendum Committee.  In recognition of her efforts on behalf of the schools, Katherine received the Iowa City Education Association Friend of Education award in 1993-94, the ECUU Friend of Education in 1994, the Foundation’s annual Friends of Education Award in 2002 and the Iowa City Area Chamber of Commerce Excellence in Education Volunteer award in 2009.

John attended Iowa City schools from kindergarten through medical school at the University of Iowa.  He retired from the University of Iowa Hospitals and Clinics and the Carver College of Medicine in 2014 after spending 35 years in the Department of Anesthesiology.  His prolific career started as the founding director of the faculty division of cardiothoracic anesthesia in the department. Along the way, John authored or co-authored over 100 scientific publications, served on the Board of Directors of the American Society of Anesthesiologists, was President of The Anesthesia Foundation, President of The Academy of Anesthesiology, and Secretary of the World Federation of Societies of Anaesthesiologists.  John has received two of the highest honors in his profession – the Citation of Merit from the Academy of Anesthesiology, as well as, the Distinguished Service Award from the World Federation of Societies of Anaesthesiologists.

According to the Moyers, “The most important investment one can make in our community is in its schools.”  John and Katherine have led by example in this case, by giving of their time and resources to the Foundation and school district over the years.  They believe that their career and life achievements would not have been possible without the Iowa City community and its schools, teachers, and administrators.   This is why they are the perfect example of a donor story that needed to be shared.

Our most sincere gratitude go to John and Katherine for their years of support of both the ICCSD schools and the Foundation.  You have made this community and its schools better with your involvement – thank you!
