Two $500 scholarships are awarded annually to two graduating seniors – one from City High and one from West High – for outstanding community service.
The 2008 recipients are Sherry Tores (City High) and Alex Penno (West High).
One $500 scholarship is awarded annually to a City High student who is a member of the Ambassador’s Club. The award is in memory of Margaret Dane Hansen, a City High School graduate and longtime teacher. $250 is awarded from the ICCSD Foundation fund and $250 is awarded by Hills Bank and Trust Company.
The 2008 recipient is Kayla Kamber.
Each year scholarships are provided for post-secondary study to graduating ICCSD students who plan to pursue a career in teaching. This scholarship is in memory of Kate Wickham, who taught in the Iowa City schools for many years. This scholarship fund was established in her memory in 1954, and since that time over 300 students have shared over $70,000 in scholarship funds. The 2008 recipients are Abby McClatchey, Jana Ozzello and Alex Penno.
Two annual scholarships are provided for post-secondary study to student athletes from City High and West High, who are deserving of assistance.
The 2008 recipients are Ted Schmidt and Ashley Vitosh(City High) and Justin Strom (West High).
This scholarship was established in memory of Christian Green, a 1994 City High graduate, who died at the age of 20 of Non-Hodgkins Lymphoma. Christian was involved in many different music activities at City High while he was a student. Each year a $500 scholarship is awarded to a City High music student who best exemplifies the spirited involvement and personal qualities that were uniquely Christian’s.
The 2008 recipient is Nick McMillian.
Two annual scholarships of $250 are given to two senior students at City High who plan to continue their education at a two year business, vocational or community college and major in a business related field. This scholarship is in memory of Marjorie Anderson Smith, a self-made business woman who helped establish the First Federal Savings and Loan Association of Iowa City.
Two $500 scholarships are awarded annually to City High School graduating seniors, one female and one male, who have been active members of the City High cross country team, have good academic standing and have been involved in other activities in school and in the community. The 2008 recipient is Brittany Dihy.
This is an annual $2,000 scholarship to a City High School graduate that has demonstrated entrepreneurial spirit throughout their high school career and will be attending college at the University of Iowa, University of Northern Iowa, or Iowa State University. In addition to a monetary award, a mentorship with Mr. Ben Greazel is available to the selected student if interested. Mr. Greazel is a Vice President with Cohen Financial, a real estate investment bank located in Chicago, IL.
One $500 scholarship is awarded annually to a graduating senior from West High School who plans to attend the University of Northern Iowa to be a teacher. This scholarship is in memory of David Kanellis, a long time language arts teacher at West High. The 2008 recipient is Kevin Graf.
This scholarship was established by an anonymous donor to provide one annual $500 scholarship to an outstanding City High graduate. The 2007 recipient is Anna Lisa Bowans.
This scholarship, in memory of Kathy Riddle, is awarded to graduating seniors who are members of the City High Girls Basketball program. The 2008 recipients are Ashley Vitosh, Catherine Saraein, Katherine Bird and MacKenzie Skay.
